Gary Winick, the 49-year-old director behind "Bride Wars" and "Letters to Juliet," has died, following a battle with brain cancer, according to multiple reports.
In addition to his mainstream credits, Winick boasted a résumé filled with independent fare as well. He produced and directed 2002's "Tadpole," a breakout coming-of-age hit at Sundance, and produced 2003's "Pieces of April," for which Patricia Clarkson received a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination. Other production credits include Richard Linklater's "Tape" and Steve Buscemi's "Lonesome Jim." Winick also directed "13 Going on 30" in 2004 and a live-action adaptation of "Charlotte's Web," which grossed more than $140 million worldwide in 2006. In total, according to TheWrap, he produced 19 films.
The filmmaker's death was first made public via Twitter, in an update from producer Matt Dentler, who wrote, "Gary Winick died today. Too late to make the Oscars tribute, but way too early. He leaves behind a legacy of supporting indie film and NYC."
"He was suffering from brain cancer for quite some time, and it ultimately metastasized throughout his body," his manager, Rosalie Swedlin, told The Hollywood Reporter. "What's remarkable is that after his first surgery, he was able to direct 'Letters to Juliet.' It was a battle that we thought he had won, and ultimately they just didn't get it all."
A memorial service is in the works and people will be asked to make charitable donations. "Gary was an incredibly important figure in the indie movement," Swedlin said. "He will be missed."

Rihanna, Ciara Fight And Make Up On Twitter
Ciara's mention of Rihanna on E! sparks online battle between the two singers.

Note to any aspiring haters out there: Rihanna is not one to be trifled with.
First, she flogged members of the media in her video for her current single "S&M," then she went all scorched-earth on censors in the U.K., who changed the title of that song to "Come On" without her knowledge and earned a fierce rebuke for their efforts. (Rihanna personally vowed to have the title changed back ... and, less than a week later, it was.)
And on Friday, she turned her wrath upon Ciara, after the singer dared dis RiRi during an appearance on E!'s "Fashion Police" with Joan Rivers.
"I ran into [Rihanna] recently at a party. She wasn't the nicest," Ciara told Rivers. "It's crazy, because I've always loved and respected what she's done in fashion. It wasn't the most pleasant run-in."
Of course, things were about to get a lot less pleasant. Soon after Ciara dared speak her name, Rihanna took to her Twitter account to strike back brand-new rival ... in less than 140 characters.
"My bad, Ci, did I forget to tip you," Rihanna wrote, including the hashtag #howrudeofme for extra spite.
Of course, that earned a response from Ciara, who wrote, "Trust me, Rihanna, you don't want to see me on or off the stage."
Rihanna replied first with a taunt ("U gangsta huh? Haaa" (link and then, after thinking about it for a minute, went for the jugular, making fun of Ciara's recent sales woes by writing, "Good luck with booking that stage you speak of."
Ciara tried to laugh off the slight, while Rihanna, perhaps feeling a twinge of remorse after vivisecting her latest foe, posted an apology: "Ciara baby, I love you girl! You hurt my feelings real bad on TV! I'm heartbroken! That's why I retaliated this way! So sorry!"
Ciara accepted RiRi's apology and suggested the two work out their problems "in person." Rihanna has yet to respond.

Hammering out a whisky hangover
Any whisky drinker will know that this golden, syrupy drink, with a backbone of 40-50 percent alcohol content, can inflict head-busting, red-eyed hangovers.
And Indians drink more whisky than any of their earthly neighbours -- 131 million cases in 2010 that we know of.
So it is logical to assume that India also tops the list for consequent hangovers.
Here are some suggestions on how to beat the hangover before, during and after a whisky binge.

Michael Jackson Doctor Conrad Murray's Trial To Be Televised
Judge rules that camera will be allowed in the courtroom for manslaughter case.

For what promises to be one of the most bizarre and riveting legal proceedings in years, a Los Angeles judge ruled on Monday that a television camera will be allowed in the courtroom when Michael Jackson's doctor goes on trial for involuntary manslaughter.
Reuters reported that Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor, approved the presence of a camera in the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray as long as it does not interfere with the proceedings in the closely watched case.
The judge asked for the "absolute least-intrusive placement" of a TV camera in the courtroom, but blocked cameras from documenting jury selection.
Pastor also announced that he would bump up the opening date of the trail by four days to March 24, at which point jury selection will begin. Murray, who faces up to four years in prison if convicted, has pleaded not guilty to the charges, and the trial is expected to last around six weeks.
Cardiologist Murray was hired to be Jackson's personal physician in the run-up to the King of Pop's planned 50-date comeback series of shows at London's O2 arena in the summer of 2009. The doctor told police that he provided Jackson, 50, with sedatives and the surgical anesthetic propofol in order to combat the singer's chronic insomnia. He said he did so on the morning of June 25, 2009, when Jackson died of what a coroner deemed acute propofol poisoning.
TMZ reported on Tuesday (February 8) that Murray's lawyers plan to argue that Jackson was already in weak health before he died and that it's unfair to blame propofol for his passing. Unnamed sources close to the case told the gossip site that at the time of his death, Jackson's body was already failing him in part because concert promoter AEG Live had "driven [him] over the edge" with a rigorous rehearsal schedule for the shows.
Murray's lawyers reportedly plan to call witnesses to say that Jackson was not showing up for rehearsals and when he did he showed "clear signs" of frail health. They also reportedly plan to argue that it was Jackson who administered the final, fatal dose of propofol to himself while Murray was out of the room.

'Glee' Stars Stayed Up All Night For 'Thriller' Cover
'It was probably one of the most physical numbers that we've ever done,' Cory Monteith says.
By James Dinh
"Glee" stars film their "Thriller" performance

When "Glee" returns from hiatus in the high-profile post-Super Bowl slot, it's returning in a big way, covering Michael Jackson's "Thriller." On Tuesday, the cast spoke to "Access Hollywood" about remaking the iconic tune, which will reportedly be mashed up with another yet-to-be-revealed hit.
"It was a huge production. We we're shooting that until 6:30 in the morning," Cory Monteith told "AH" at the Television Critics Association press tour. "We shot all night, and it was probably one of the most physical numbers that we've ever done. I was lifting Naya Rivera at one point in the dance. It was really active. We had the whole USC band wrapped in to this number as you can see in the photos. It was awesome."
Photos of the cast filming "Thriller" surfaced on the Internet recently, depicting a prom night-turned-zombie affair. Jackson's tune is just one of the many hits to be covered in the broadcast. Other songs featured in the post-Super Bowl episode include hits by the Black Eyed Peas, Katy Perry and Lady Antebellum.
Kevin McHale revealed that Jackson is his "favorite artist ever" and that he has been continuously requesting to cover a tune by the late King of Pop. "I've been pushing very obnoxiously for a very, very long time, so I'm beyond thrilled that we do Michael Jackson," said the actor.
Like the iconic music video, the "Glee" cover was an extravagant production, which was fitting for star Dianna Agron, who couldn't help smile throughout filming.
"The whole night, everybody kept saying, 'Why are you laughing so much? Why are you smiling so much?' " she said. "I was just in my element. I was in huge makeup, huge hair, huge costume, the stuff that I loved the most, which is why I loved 'Rocky [Horror Picture Show]' so much."
Matthew Morrison isn't in the number, but he watched it being shot. "We actually shot it, like, a couple nights ago," Morrison told "AH." "I actually went out to see it. We shot it in Long Beach and at a high school that we used their football field at. It was stunning. It's so weird with this show. We keep outdoing ourselves. It's like, 'What is there left to do?' This number is just fantastic."

'Breaking Dawn' Star Talks Bella's Bridal Gown, Vampire Makeover
Billy Burke, a.k.a. Dad Charlie Swan, tells MTV News he's mostly 'oblivious to everything that's going on with vampires' on set.
By Kara Warner
It's been awhile now since we've had any updates from the castmembers of the highly anticipated "Breaking Dawn" two-part finale. Thus far this year, there have been steamy bedroom photos, talk of Kristen Stewart's impressive transformation into a vampire and Peter Facinelli's thoughts on an epic vampire-on-vampire battle scene at the end of Part 2.
When MTV News caught up with "Breaking Dawn" supporting player Billy Burke recently, he reluctantly gave us the vaguest of answers when we asked about his favorite filming moment so far.
"We are having a lot of fun," Burke said while doing press for his upcoming violent thriller "Drive Angry." "We're in the midst of that now."
Burke, who plays the (mostly) blissfully ignorant father Charlie to Kristen Stewart's Bella, said his character is up to the same old tricks in the final two "Twilight" films.
"I go back in about a week to continue my job in that movie," he said. "Which is being oblivious to everything that's going on with vampires and werewolves."
Those familiar with the vampire films will agree that this is a fair and accurate assessment of his character's story line. Still, we assumed that surely Burke has been privy to a few fun details, so we asked whether his character, Charlie Swan, finds out that his daughter has become a vampire in "Breaking Dawn - Part 1."
"In the first part? No," Burke revealed. "That's no secret, [for] those who have read the books," he explained.
What about Bella's wedding dress? Has he seen that yet?
"No," Burke said with finality, declining to divulge any more "Dawn" details.

'Hangover Part II' Trailer: The Five Coolest Moments
From the monkey on Bradley Cooper's back to Ed Helms' tribal face tattoo, we can't wait to hit this destination wedding.
By Eric Ditzian
Ed Helms, Bradley Cooper and Zack Galifianakis in "The Hangover Part II"
Photo: Warner Bros.
Todd Phillips promised and he delivered. Last week, the writer/director — who these days can't seem to make an R-rated comedy that doesn't do mega-business across the globe — assured MTV News that the teaser trailer for "Hangover Part II" would be popping up online this week.
And pop up it has. True to Phillips' words the footage is "truly a teaser," with almost no dialogue and little hint about the events surrounding what clearly turns an innocent destination wedding in Thailand into a life-altering disaster. We do, however, contest Phillips' speculation that the teaser "might end up frustrating more than solving questions." While questions are hardly solved, we couldn't be more pumped finally to feast our eyes on official footage from the Memorial Day weekend release. Here are our picks for the five coolest moments:
Hotel or Prison?
In "The Hangover," Bradley Cooper and his pals find their way into one of the chicest suites in Las Vegas. Their digs in Thailand, alas, look more like the confines of a prison — less "King and I" than "Brokedown Palace." There's no way that this was their original resort locale. It's anybody's guess how and why they end up in this dump.
Say Goodbye to That Security Deposit
This image is a direct homage to the post-party scene in "Hangover": After swilling what turned out to be roofie-infused booze, the friends awoke in their trashed Vegas suite, each one nursing a nuclear headache as a tiger roamed freely in the bathroom. This time around, the morning after takes place in a decidedly less glamorous environment and the big cat is replaced by an oversize cockroach.
The Wolf Pack is Back
In the original film, Zach Galifianakis proudly — and nonsensically — welcomed the crew into his wolf pack. Disaster ensued. This shot shows the gang back together again. Missing, interestingly, is Justin Bartha, who went missing in the first flick and whose absence in the new trailer seems to lend credence to the rumor that he'll once again disappear in "Part II."
Is This Kind of Nice?
The trailer's first piece of dialogue belongs to Galifianakis and it's, predictably, hilariously detached from what is clearly a seriously bad situation. Why else is a monkey wrapped around Cooper's neck? Why does Galifianakis look like a blind man shaved his noggin? And about Ed Helms' face ...
Mike Tyson, Trendsetter
Iron Mike's cameo in "Hangover" was one of the comedy's finest pleasures. And as we've seen from "Part II" photos, Helms somehow finds himself branded with Tyson's most infamous identifier: a tribal face tattoo. For a guy about to get married, that's just not a good look. As he says before hanging his head, "Oh god!"

Britney Spears Added Her 'Flavor' To 'Hold It Against Me' Fight Scene
Martial-arts expert Steven Ho talks to MTV News about working on the new video.
By Jocelyn Vena
Britney Spears fights herself in "Hold It Against Me"

Last week, fans were treated to the premiere of Britney Spears' "Hold It Against Me" video. The sleek, dark look at celebrity life was a new aesthetic for the star, who hooked up with Jonas Åkerlund on the clip.
While her dance scenes were choreographed by Brian Friedman, it was noted Hollywood martial-arts expert Steven Ho who helped Britney work out the moves to battle herself in the video.
"I've been very fortunate to have worked on a wide range of high-profile projects, and the video's producer, Hagai Shaham, thought my style would be a good fit with Jonas and Britney. I was brought in to train Britney, choreograph the fight and set up wires for the levitation shots," he told MTV News about joining the project.
"I've always wanted to work with Jonas," he continued. "I knew that a stylized fight would translate well with his trademark visuals, so I was thrilled about doing this project. Jonas wanted a superhuman fight with elements of brutality — that's right up my alley of how I approach an action scene, so we were definitely all on the same page throughout the process."
Not only were Åkerlund and Ho onboard for some mortal combat, but the star herself warmed up to the idea of battling a clone. "Britney was really excited throughout the whole process. It was a grueling shoot of dance and stunts, but her passion for the video and professionalism never wavered," he explained. "There were some pretty tough insert shots where we needed Britney to actually get hit in the face by 'herself.' We did several consecutive takes of this, and she had a lot of fun with it and was a great sport.
"Britney was very enthusiastic about learning how to fight; she's an athlete," he added. "I got that Jonas' concept was partially about the duality of self — we all deal with that, so who wouldn't have fun fighting their alter egos?"
The key, it seems, was making Ho's fight moves work with Friedman's dance routine. "It was really great working with Brian; he's an absolute professional. He was diligent about our fight style being cohesive with the dancing, and that's why it worked so well," Ho recalled. "Our rehearsals were on the same stage, so it was very helpful to have Brian's feedback from a dancer's point of view."
It seems that one of the most memorable moves in the fight, Spears' quickstep during the smack-down, was all her own.
"Britney was fantastic about incorporating what we had practiced in rehearsal, and as a consummate performer, she was able to take ownership by adding her own flavor to the fight. There's a quick cut in the video that features Britney taking a series of small shuffle steps in her heels. This is something she came up with herself that I thought added a nice break of 'cuteness' in the fight," he said. "Jonas drowned out the music here to highlight the tapping sounds, and it's really one of my favorite beats of the video."
Aside from the two Britneys, the other main characters in the fight were her sky-high heels and flowing gowns. "The wardrobe was one of the stars of the fight," he explained. "At first I was concerned about how to approach the long trains. There were discussions with Jonas and [stylist] B. [Åkerlund] and [fashion assistant Renelou Padora] about possibly shortening the train for safety issues. After I showed my wife [designer Nina Petronzio] the pictures of the dresses, she literally said, 'I will kill you if you cut those trains down.' We ended up incorporating the trains as 'weapons.' We treated them as if they were sharp blades, giving Britney reason to jump and evade around them."

Patrick Stump Says Truant Wave EP Isn't Take This To Your Grave, Part II
Erstwhile Fall Out Boy frontman's solo EP made iTunes debut Tuesday.
By James Montgomery
Patrick Stump
Photo: Michael Caulfield/WireImage
Late last year, when Patrick Stump told MTV News that his solo debut, Soul Punk, was tentatively due in February, there was much rejoicing from long-suffering Fall Out Boy fans, all of whom were clamoring for any bit of news surrounding their favorite group.
Of course, that rejoicing was tempered some when it was subsequently announced that Stump had pushed back Soul Punk in favor of a six-song EP called Truant Wave. And on Tuesday, with little lead-up and absolutely zero promotion, that EP premiered on iTunes. It not only provided FOB fans a preview of where Stump is headed, musically, but also served as a point of division among their ranks. Some loved the electronic-leaning, R&B-teasing jams, while others, well, they were probably hoping Stump would return to his pop-punk roots.
When he spoke to MTV News on Thursday, Stump addressed both sides of the issue, because, quite frankly, he understands why some would be upset by his new direction. In fact, that's part of the reason he put out Truant Wave in the first place: to soften the blow.
"I really want Soul Punk to have as much of a chance to have it be listened to discerningly," he laughed. "And if I'm going to disappoint people by not [making] Take This to Your Grave, Part II, I would rather do that before Soul Punk, because that record means something to me."
Of course, there were other reasons for rushing the EP out, most of which he learned the hard way during Fall Out Boy's final days.
"Remember when Fall Out boy was putting out Folie à Deux and were going to put it out on Election Day, and then, for all these various reasons, all signs pointed to 'Don't do this'? That was sort of the case here. The logistics just weren't lining up," he explained. "And I had way too much material. ... A lot of it didn't make sense on the record, but it still felt like something, so I made a little mini-record out of them, and it sort of became a concept record for me. So for all those reasons and more, I decided, 'Screw it, I'm going to put this out.' "
So, yes, Soul Punk is still coming, but in the meantime, Stump hopes fans will take the time to digest the tunes he's presenting on Truant Wave, a shiny menagerie of rubber-band funk, electro-pop and spacey, 23rd-century R&B that's also, as Stump explained, a bit of a concept record too.
"It's not as strict a concept album in that I don't have a narrator or epic space battles or anything like that. It's pretty bare-bones and it works as a pop record," he said. "Basically, I took this idealistic, naive little character, and at the beginning of the record, he has the best intentions, the highest hopes, and, as you get towards the middle of the record, he's just such an a--hole. And then the character gets really dark, and then, at the end, I envisioned him being really down and out in Hollywood, like drunk and telling someone, 'Look, kid, don't make the same mistakes I did.' ... It has a narrative, but it's not like I named the characters or know anything about these things."
So, for now, with his EP just out and a sold-out run of shows on the horizon, Stump is content to sit back and watch fans figure out his new direction. And, at the moment, he couldn't be happier with the results.
"I told people about this record a week ago, two weeks ago, there was no promo, no press, nothing, so, for it to do as well as it has, it's definitely gratifying," he said. "In the back of my head, there's always this little voice that's like, 'Just don't blow it,' and so far, so good, you know?"

Ke$ha Enlists James Van Der Beek For 'Blow' Video
Singer and former 'Dawson's Creek' star battle it out in her new music video.
By Jocelyn Vena
Ke$ha in her video for "Blow"

Ke$ha's new music video for her song "Blow" opens with this disclaimer: "No mythological creatures were harmed in the making of this video."
Ke$ha isn't referring to "Dawson's Creek" star James Van Der Beek, who makes a cameo in the video. She's referring to the champagne-swilling, hard-partying unicorns that also make an appearance in the video, which takes place at a society party.
Looking glossy and glam in her one-shoulder dress, she tells two unicorns, "I grabbed the bear by the throat, looked him right in the eyes and said, 'Bear you have until the count of zero to put some pants on and apologize to the president. And that's the story of how I was elected to the parliament of Uzbekistan."
She then giggles as she looks into the camera, telling viewers to "dance." Soon, she locks eyes with Van Der Beek. Ke$ha and Van Der Beek exchange glances as they make their way through the party. Scenes of their longing (and unicorns dancing with one another) are edited with scenes of Ke$ha, in a bodysuit, mugging for the camera, singing the song and kissing more unicorns.
Van Der Beek begins stripping off his suit jacket and dances his way towards the singer, who then pulls off her bra from under her gown. He follows suit, leaving viewers laughing and Ke$ha understandably perplexed about why he wears a bra under his dress shirt.
"Well, well, well ... if it isn't James Van Der Douche," she says.
"I don't appreciate you slander-beeking my name," Van Der Beek replies.
After snipping at one another and trading barbs, they begin shooting lasers at one another in a battle sequence, knocking down and killing rainbow-shooting unicorns in the process. In the end, it's revealed that Ke$ha has killed the actor and mounted his head on her wall, laughing off the encounter. The plaque in which his head is displayed reads "James Van Der Dead."

Esteemed MTV Movies Editor and After Hours host Josh Horowitz will be live on the red carpet from 6-8 p.m. ET on Sunday evening to chat up the show's nominees from Natalie Portman and Colin Firth to Jesse Eisenberg and Jennifer Lawrence.
But he won't keep all the fun to himself: In addition to asking his own questions, he'll toss some of your questions to the stars as well! Starting Tuesday (February 22), tweet your questions to @mtvnews using the hashtag #oscars for a chance to see your favorite celebrities fielding your very own inquiries. Ask your questions all week long and be sure to send some in throughout the show, as we'll be able to take your questions live on the carpet.
Last year, we spoke with a vast array of stars including Jake Gyllenhaal, Steve Carell, Tina Fey, George Clooney, Sandra Bullock and many more. We're looking to top last year's performance and then some, so make sure to tune in and participate!
The Oscars air this Sunday night at 8 p.m. ET on ABC, with actors James Franco and Anne Hathaway serving as co-hosts. Come back to MTV News all week long for predictions, analysis and more.
